Surrey Museums Consultative Committee

Development Plan 1998 - 2002

Aim

By 2002, we intend to make a substantial contribution to the increased

  • awareness
  • enjoyment
  • use and
  • professional standards of museums in Surrey, and that
  • the community and economic benefits of our museums will be recognised locally regionally nationally

Ten guiding principles:

  1. take every opportunity to maximise financial and other resources for the benefit of museums
  2. aid communication for all those involved with SMCC
  3. be realistic and achievable
  4. have tangible and measurable outcomes
  5. help raise the profile of museums to both councillors and the public
  6. improve standards of museums - behind the scenes and front of house
  7. be enabling for museums, not directive of prescriptive
  8. provide access and involvement for all types of museums
  9. take account of the wider framework within which Surrey museums operate
  10. be forward looking and strategic

Five core development areas:

  • Collections management
  • Education
  • Marketing
  • Visitor Services
  • Museum Management

Collections management

  • implement key recommendations of previous surveys
  • support museums through Registration Phase II
  • further surveys

Education

  • promote the use of collections for curriculum support (other than history, particularly Science and Technology)
  • work with Secondary schools
  • encourage schools to use lesser used museums
  • provide professional advice to voluntary museums
  • initiate a more proactive involvement with teachers

"We will work with museums to develop a sustainable framework for museum education."

Marketing

  • raise awareness of the importance of marketing with museums
  • raise the public profile of museums in Surrey and thereby increase their support
  • to encourage museums to develop a better awareness of existing and potential customers and their needs

Visitor Services

  • encourage more and greater use of museums through the promotion of high quality front of house services

Museum Management

  • encourage museums to adopt sound management approaches in order to maximise resources in a competitive environment
  • encourage each local authority to clarify their policy to museums within their area
  • help those working in all types of museums to acquire the skills and resources to manage a modern museum service

And we also ....

  • provide training
  • provide information and undertake advisory work
  • provide grants
  • gather and manage resources for our work
