Other geological resources and sources of information

There are a number of adult education courses in geology which may be running at any one moment within the county. Occasional courses on Surrey or Wealden geology are run at the Juniper Hall Field Study Centre in Dorking, at Surrey University in Guildford and at Leatherhead College of Further Education. Full time degree courses are established at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, and additionally, there may be part time and some form of adult education/ extra-mural courses.

The recording and conservation /management of geological sites is largely being undertaken by the Surrey RIGS (Regionally Important Geological Sites) Group. They are primarily concerned with those sites not already Geological or Biological SSSI 's and for which English Nature do not have any statutory responsibility. The database for RIGS sites which have already been nominated resides at the Surrey Wildlife Trust. There is also another database at this location that comprises of (known and recorded) non-RIGS sites. This was put together by John Frampton. Although this is no longer in the process of being actively collated or worked on, together these form a potential Geological Records Centre for Surrey, and as such has been nominated by the NSGSD (National Scheme for Geological Site Documentation).
