SMCC > Collections > Textiles > A to Z > Reigate Priory Museum Reigate Priory MuseumReigate Priory Museum's costume collection contains items of men's, women's, children's and babies clothing from the 19th and 20th century. Two valuable items from earlier periods are a Tudor jacket dated 1600 which was found hidden in the chimney of a local house and a polonaise style gown dated 1780, with quilted underskirt 1760. There is a great emphasis on the Victorian era. As the Victorian period forms an important element in the National Curriculum these costumes are most valuable to us. Accessories include bags and purses, fans, parasols, shoes, shawls and lace. There is an interesting collection of uniforms worn during the Second World War. A needlework section contains needlework tools, needlework samples and scale-model costumed figures made by College students in the early 20th century. Please note that much of the costume and needlework collection is in store and students should contact the Museum to discuss their study needs and to make an appointment.
