This seminar sought to take a 'nuts and bolts' approach, looking at specific
measures museums and galleries could take to improve facilities and to
give better access to all sections of the community. It also examined
the legal framework in which museums must work, looked at organisations
which might be able to assist and explored how to adapt training courses
to help disabled visitors and to encourage the employment of more disbaled
people on the museum profession.

The new edition of Designing for Accessibility is a completely up-to-date
and user-friendly good practice guide based on the 2004 Approved Document
M and BS 8300:2001 in the context of the Disability Discrimination Act
1995 (DDA). Aimed at all those seeking to fulfil their service provider
duties under the DDA as well as architects, designers, facilities managers
and a range of consumers, Designing for Accessibility includes extensive
plans and dimensional data illustrating internal and external features
that commonly need attention in public buildings. The design recommendations
occasionally go beyond those specified in Part M and BS 8300, reflecting
good practice derived from user experience, good design and, where possible,
empirical research.

ACC 77 TALKING IMAGES RESEARCH - MUSEUMS, GALLERIES AND HERITAGE SITES:
Improving access for blind and partially sighted people (RNIB, 2003)
The Talking Images Research summarises the findings of the research studies
undertaken for the project. These studies include a phone survey of 270
blind and partially sighted people, a survey of venues and audits of audio
guides and services undertaken by a team of 12 blind and partially sighted
auditors. The publication is primarily aimed at staff in museums, galleries
and heritage sites with responsibility for increasing access to their
venues. It is also a valuable tool to inform policy makers, education
and access practitioners and those responsible for ensuring access provision
in the sector.
