Surrey has over 40 museums, galleries and heritage sites, collectively called ‘museums’.

With its beautiful and varied landscape, closeness to London and good trade routes, Surrey has always attracted a wide variety of people. As well as world-famous royals, artists, writers, musicians, politicians, historians and pioneers the county has been home to world-class trades, crafts, industries and sport. Each has left its stamp on the county’s heritage, told through Surrey’s museums unique collections, exhibitions and events.

Many treasures of local, national and international importance can be discovered among the museum collections, telling unique stories of the people, places and events that have influenced and shaped Surrey’s heritage.

A taste of what you might discover

An Egyptian mummy, a giant Japanese spider crab, exquisite costume, a Viking sword, Concorde, 30 London buses, castles, a crystal grotto, army museums, the extensive County archive rich with documents from 11th to 21st centuries, life under the ‘Tramp Master’, the first purpose-built motor racing circuit in the world, an open-air museum celebrating rural life with traditional crafts, and some of the most stunning artwork in the southeast.     

Experience Surrey Museums

All year round, Surrey museums provide a wide range of experiences and services for people of all interests and all ages. If you are looking for great days out with your friends and family, then why not explore a few and get involved with hands-on workshops, activities or events. 

For children and families there are arts and crafts activities each weekend and holiday as well as family events, exhibitions, re-enactments, talks, tours, trails and plenty of creative workshops. There are groups for budding archaeologists and curators ages 8-16, storytelling sessions for Under 5s, help with research and many historic sites to explore.

For adults There are changing exhibitions, regular talks by curators and guest speakers, guided tours, events and fascinating venues. There is excellent research material available, along with a variety of workshops exploring themes such as photography, embroidery, painting, drawing and creative writing. Tailored sessions can be arranged for special interest groups and there are volunteering opportunities countywide.

For schools, colleges, universities and students A wide range of curriculum areas is supported through tailored workshops, loan boxes, and resource packs. Surrey museums are experienced working with schools in partnership on projects, and also provide opportunities for students to experience heritage through work placements and volunteering opportunities.

In partnership…Surrey museums have plenty of experience working with a range of communities and partners such as Surrey Arts, Countryside, MIND, Gypsy Roma Traveller and Surrey Association for Visual Impairment. Opportunities to work in partnership are always welcome.
